Alexei Navalny

In a shocking turn of events, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been reported dead by prison authorities.

The Federal Penitentiary Service announced on the afternoon of February 16th that Navalny passed away in Correctional Colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of the Russian Federation.

According to a report by RIA Novosti, Navalny, a prominent critic of the Russian government, fell ill after a walk and quickly lost consciousness.

Medical staff at the facility responded immediately, and emergency medical services were summoned. Despite their efforts, all attempts at resuscitation proved futile.

The exact cause of death is yet to be determined.

Navalny had been incarcerated since early 2021, and in August 2023, he was sentenced to 19 years in a high-security penal colony on charges of extremism by the Moscow City Court.

His confinement in Correctional Colony No. 3, known as the “Polar Bear” colony, situated in the town of Kharp, marked another chapter in his tumultuous journey against the Kremlin’s regime.

The colony gained notoriety for housing particularly dangerous repeat offenders, as reported by Novaya Gazeta in 2006.

Among its previous inmates was Platon Lebedev, a business partner of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, both prominent figures in the Yukos case.
