Arina Corsicova, an independent candidate in Moldova’s local elections, has taken her case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after being excluded from participating in the November 2023 local elections.

Corsicova ran for Mayor of Balti municipality. She placed second out of 14 candidates and qualified to stand in the second round held on November 19th. But, The Electoral Council of Balti Municipality excluded her from participating in the second round vote following objections from a rival political party leader.

“I filed this appeal to the ECHR to ensure fairness and justice in Moldova’s elections. What happened in Balti undermines democracy, and I refuse to accept it,” said Corsicova.

Corsicova’s appeal aims to address concerns about electoral fairness and uphold the rights of all citizens to participate in elections. The ECHR’s decision to hear her case reflects the importance of protecting democratic principles.
