China and Russia Collaborate on Drone Development Similar to Iran’s “Shahed”

Chinese and Russian companies are developing a strike drone similar to Iran’s “Shahed,” which has been actively used in attacks on Ukraine, according to European officials familiar with the matter, as reported by Bloomberg.

Officials did not identify the drone under development, but Chinese defence websites and several media outlets have indicated that China is working on a kamikaze strike drone named Sunflower 200. This drone reportedly bears a resemblance to the Iranian Shahed 136 in its appearance and functionality.

In 2023, companies from China and Russia engaged in discussions regarding the cooperation to replicate the Iranian Shahed drone. This year, the development and testing phase of this version has begun, with the aim of preparing it for deployment to Russia. Officials, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the information, disclosed this detail. They also noted that Chinese drones have not yet been used in Ukraine.

Several countries believe that supplying Russia with drones for attack purposes would cross the threshold of lethal assistance. Two officials conveyed this concern, highlighting the implications of such actions.

One individual, familiar with the situation, mentioned that the United States estimates that China is deliberating whether to send fully assembled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) but is currently sending kits that can be assembled into strike drones. This method allows for a more discreet form of support, avoiding direct accusations of supplying lethal aid.

The United States has not yet concluded that China is providing lethal assistance to Russia, though it acknowledges that other countries may interpret the situation differently.

The collaboration between China and Russia in developing a drone similar to Iran’s Shahed 136 signals a significant shift in military technology dynamics. The Shahed 136, known for its kamikaze capabilities, has been a notable asset in Iran’s military arsenal, particularly in asymmetric warfare scenarios.
