Islamist Threats

In preparation for the upcoming UEFA European Championship and the Olympic Games, Germany and France have announced a joint effort to combat terrorism during these high-profile events.

This collaboration involves the deployment of German police forces in Paris for the Olympics and French police in Germany for the Euros.

Highlighting the significance of security during such large-scale gatherings, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) emphasized the necessity of close cooperation with her French counterpart, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

The UEFA European Championship is scheduled to take place in Germany from mid-June to mid-July, while the Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11.

“German police forces will be deployed at the Olympics in Paris, French police at the Euros in Germany,” said German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) to the “Handelsblatt.”

The security during the major sporting events is of paramount importance in both countries. Therefore, Faeser emphasised that she had agreed on “close cooperation” with French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

“Identifying and Preventing Islamist Terror Plans Early”

Earlier this week, Faeser had already announced controls at all German borders for the duration of the European Championship. According to her statements to the “Handelsblatt,” these measures are unavoidable to prevent “violent offenders – whether Islamists, other extremists, or hooligans – from entering.”

The Federal Police will proceed prudently to minimize the impact of controls on commuters and trade traffic as much as possible.

According to the Minister, German security authorities will “fortify themselves even more against all current threat situations.”

This ranges “from protection against Islamists and other potential perpetrators of violence to the security of our networks against cyber attacks.”

The federal and state governments are doing everything possible to “identify and prevent Islamist terror plans early.”
