Pandemic has cost Hungary up to 130,000 jobs, reports minister Gergely Gulyas

Hungary has lost 120,000 to 130,000 jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s chief of staff Gergely Gulyas announced on Thursday.

“The virus has attacked not just health but jobs as well,” Gulyas told a news conference, adding the number of job losses was not as drastic as initial expectations.

Prior to the outbreak unemployment in the country was running steady at just under 3.5%.

The government has reported a considerable surge in applications to enlist in the military in the last month.
