Gearing up for fun-filled karting - at Europe's top track

Ever wonder where the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher learned their trade before becoming Grand Prix stars?

Well,  it was on local karting tracks where these and others took their first tentative steps on the road to fame and fortune.

If you fancy trying to follow in their footsteps – or just want a spot of karting fun – then there really is only one place to head for in Belgium: Karting Eupen.

This is one of the longest indoor karting worldwide with, for those who just to choose to watch, great panoramic views on the circuit.

It is known as the biggest and most modern indoor circuit in Europe (and one of the top 4 in the world) for good reason.

This is not least due to the design, with its exceptional 1 km slope and Red Bull bridge/tunnel. There is also a perfect mix of corners including elevation changes, lots of hairpins and turns, and good/safe wall guards. The track is well maintained and the karts are all in very good working order.

A standard karting session lasts 14 minutes but be warned: with the admin process involved, the time to take the equipment and the all important safety briefing, you can very easily allow at least 90 minutes on site.

And, even if you are not a huge fan of racing, you will still have lots to choose from: be it the Bar-Bistro, large terrace, multifunctional halls or the racing-fashion store. This karting site is equipped with changing rooms, individual showers and large parking and there is free Wifi as well. You are allowed to take your own helmets or use theirs. You can even, for a small cost, buy a balaclava for that extra touch of racing authenticity!

Karting Eupen has a mix of karts for adults, children as well as for people with a physical disability plus 2 karts that fits 2 people.

It is good fun whether if it is for a family session or a "Hamilton v Vettel-type" race between professionals.

The centre used to be situated nearby but relocated to its current, large site just over two years ago. It now attracts visitors and participants from all over Belgium as well as France, Germany and the Netherlands.

Located on an industrial park just outside Eupen, in the eastern part of Belgium, it is easily accessible from Brussels and the venue also makes the perfect location for a race amongst friends, birthday party or company team building event.

The track is unusually long for an indoor venue, one reason why the centre is considered as a perfect model for other karting venues in the world.

With the new Formula One season now well underway, Karting Eupen is a timely reminder of how the race idols of the past and present once plied their trade when they were just setting out on their careers.

The fun factor here is great and makes for a great day out…. even for people who aren't into karting.
