Avishai Cohen Trio, Portico Quartet, STUFF., Emma-Jean Thackray, Alfa Mist, Lefto, NAG, KAU trio, Boombox Experiments, ECHT! and MiXMONK added to the bill of the 40th-anniversary edition of the Middelheim jazz festival.
In recent years, Jazz Middelheim ran from Thursday to Sunday. But because major festivals in Belgium are only allowed again as from Friday, August 13th, this year the event will kick-off on Friday August 13th, and will run for five days, coming to a close on Tuesday August 17th.
The biggest day will certainly be Monday August 16th, when the Avisha Cohen Trio take to the stage.
Israeli bassist, singer and composer Cohen (pictured right), then a rising newcomer to the Jazz scene, first played Middelheim in 2012.
He began playing the piano in Israel at the age of nine years old, continuing his studies after moving to St. Louis, Missouri with his family aged fourteen, when he began to play the bass guitar.
The electric bass put a spell on him when his teacher introduced him to the music of luminary bassist Jaco Pastorius. Back in Israel, Avishai joined the Music and Arts Academy in Jerusalem to further explore the bass universe.
He will be accompanied on stage by Elchin Shirinov on piano, and Roni Kaspi on drums.
The line-for the full five days has yet to be finalised.
