EU Court of Justice rejects Austrian appeal against UK Hinkley C nuclear plant

The Luxembourg based Court of Justice has confirmed the European Commission's decision approving UK state aid for Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.

Europe’s top court on Tuesday rejected an appeal by Austria against the subsidised plant, agreeing with EU competition regulators that government aid offered to Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, a 3,200 MWe nuclear power station with two EPR reactors in Somerset, England, was in line with EU state aid rules.

The European Commission gave the green light to the project in 2014, triggering a court challenge from Austria which has opposed nuclear power for decades.
