President Donald Trump will receive Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at the White House later today (May 13th), despite warnings from leading Republicans and Democrats over his record on rule of law and his increasingly close ties with Vladimir Putin's Russia, Reuters reports.
The White House insists this is part of Trump’s policy of re-engaging with leaders in central and eastern Europe, arguing they have been neglected by past U.S. administrations. It cannot have escaped Trump’s notice that the invitation comes right in the middle of the European Parliament election campaign, leading to accusations that Trump is favouring the populist side in its attempt to undermine mainstream candidates.
