Turkish troops invade Northern Syria

Whilst details are not clear, it is reported that Turkish troops have launched a major incursion into Syria. EU Today sources report heavy airstrikes against Kurdish communities, with significant civilian casualties.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was to create a "safe zone" cleared of Kurdish militias which will also house Syrian refugees.

The true aim of the operation remains unclear, but at the time of writing it is reported that there are heavy air attacks on civil areas.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has condemned the Turkish offensive Wednesday "in the strongest possible terms," and called on Ankara to end the operation and pursue its security interests peacefully.
