"Focus on preparing for war" China's President Xi tells his troops
Following deliberately high-profile military exercises in the South China Sea, an area from which the country seeks to expand its territory, President Xi Jinping told marine forces marine soldiers in the southern Chinese Guangdong base to focus on war preparedness while remaining highly vigilant.
This comes amid heightened tensions surrounding Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own.
He urged the soldiers to "speed up improving" their combat capabilities in order to become a "multi-functional, rapid response, all-weather and regional" elite force.
In recent weeks Chinese bombers have reportedly carried out simulated attacks on US Andersen Air Force Base on the Pacific island of Guam.
Anderson AFB is the major command, intelligence, and operational hub for US forces in the Pacific.
