In a notable development within Moldova’s political landscape, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova has once again refused to register Vasile Bolea, a candidate backed by the pro-Moscow bloc “Victory,” for the upcoming presidential elections.
This decision, made during a commission meeting on Saturday, marks the second rejection of Bolea’s candidacy within the span of a few days.
Bolea, a former member of the Moldovan Socialist Party, had been nominated by the “Victory” bloc earlier in August. Despite his alignment with pro-Russian sentiments, Bolea attempted to present himself as an independent candidate when submitting his registration documents.
This latest decision by the CEC follows an earlier rejection on 29 August, leading Bolea to publicly criticise what he termed a “puppet CEC.” He has vowed to challenge the decision in court, signalling a contentious legal battle ahead as Moldova moves closer to its presidential election scheduled for 20 October.
In contrast to Bolea’s experience, the CEC accepted the documents of three other potential candidates, including former Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev. Meanwhile, another candidate, Lyudmila Korsun, also faced rejection alongside Bolea.
Sandu, who has held the presidency since 2020, is widely seen as a pro-European leader, a stance that contrasts sharply with the pro-Moscow orientation of candidates like Bolea and Korsun. The election is expected to serve as a referendum on Moldova’s foreign policy direction, particularly its relationship with Russia and the European Union.
