NATO battlegroup

This week Spain took command of the multinational NATO battlegroup in Slovakia, succeeding Czechia, which had been leading the battlegroup since its establishment in 2022.

Troops from Czechia, Slovakia and Slovenia are deployed alongside the 700 Spanish troops as part of the battlegroup, bolstering Allied deterrence and defence on NATO’s eastern flank.

Spanish military personnel were recently involved leading another multinational exercise – Slovak Shield, part of Steadfast Defender 24 – NATO’s largest military exercise since the Cold War.

Here Spain demonstrated its ability to lead a multinational Brigade, contributing effectively to the new concept of Deterrence and Defense of the Euro-Atlantic zone.

Spain is a responsible ally, committed to NATO’s defense objectives. With this deployment of forces in support and reinforcement of the advanced presence on NATO’s eastern flank, Spain’s determined contribution to deterrence efforts is evident.

Spain is also contributing to NATO’s multinational battlegroup led by Canada in Latvia.
