Starlink Outage Hampers Ukrainian Defence Amid Russian Offensive

The Starlink outage, attributed to Russian electronic jamming, compounded the challenge faced by Ukrainian forces during the recent Russian offensive across Ukraine’s northeastern border.

This offensive has resulted in significant territorial gains for Moscow, capitalising on a moment of notable vulnerability for the Ukrainian military.

Despite earlier intelligence indicating an impending attack, the offensive, launched on May 10, caught Ukrainian forces off guard.

The critical outage of Starlink devices, integral to Ukrainian defence as they provide satellite internet, severely hindered Ukrainian communication and reconnaissance capabilities.

The 125th Territorial Defence Brigade, responsible for monitoring a 27-mile stretch of the Kharkiv region’s border, found themselves “completely blind” as their Starlink devices were rendered inoperative.

“This was the biggest problem; we didn’t see how they were moving,” said a drone unit commander known by his call sign, Artist.

This technological setback was unprecedented since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

The loss of drone feeds and communication left Ukrainian forces reliant on less effective means such as radio and phones, which were not always reliable.

Rapid Russian Advances

Within days, Russian forces captured approximately 50 square miles of territory along the border.

This second capture of the region underscored the increased effectiveness and adaptation of Russian military tactics, contrasting sharply with their initial blunders at the outset of the invasion.

Russian troops utilised sophisticated electronic warfare, significantly hindering Ukrainian efforts to fortify their positions and respond effectively.

Ukrainian Military Strains

The Ukrainian military, already stretched thin and facing severe personnel shortages and fatigue, struggled to mobilise reinforcements rapidly.

Complaints about these shortages had persisted for months, but efforts to ramp up mobilisation were slow, leaving some front-line areas critically understaffed.

A delayed U.S. aid package, which included funding for essential ammunition and air defence, exacerbated the situation, leaving Ukrainian forces often unable to return fire effectively.

The Russian offensive targeted strategic points, moving between natural barriers like rivers to minimise Ukrainian counter-attacks.

The capture of Vovchansk, for example, potentially opens a pathway for Russian forces to advance towards Kupyansk, a city liberated by Ukrainian forces in September 2022.

Another attack direction towards the village of Lyptsi brings Russian forces within shelling range of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

As civilians flee the affected areas, processing and registration centres in Kharkiv have become overwhelmed with the influx of displaced individuals.

Future Prospects and Challenges

The exact scale and objectives of the Russian offensive remain uncertain. However, experts suggest that capturing Kharkiv city is not an immediate goal due to Russia’s own personnel limitations.

Instead, the creation of a buffer zone to protect Russia’s Belgorod region from Ukrainian strikes appears to be the primary aim.

This strategic move is part of a larger, long-term plan to solidify Russian territorial gains and prevent future Ukrainian incursions.

Ukrainian Response and Resilience

Despite the setbacks, Ukrainian forces continue to mount a determined defence. Reinforcements have been redirected from other critical regions, including Donetsk and Luhansk, to bolster the Kharkiv front.

The National Guard’s Khartia Brigade has taken up positions along the border, with soldiers constantly adapting to the rapidly changing battlefield dynamics.

Col. Ihor Obolyenskyi, commander of the Khartia Brigade, highlighted the intensified nature of the Russian assaults, with larger groups of infantry making coordinated advances.

The use of glide bombs by Russian forces, which cannot be intercepted by air defence once dropped, poses a significant challenge, necessitating frequent repositioning by Ukrainian units.
