French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, delivered an update on the ongoing anti-drug operation “place nette XXL” during his visit to Saint-Denis, Seine-Saint-Denis, this Saturday afternoon.

The operation has garnered significant attention as it marks a pivotal moment in the government’s efforts to combat drug trafficking across France.

Darmanin highlighted the nationwide impact of the operation, stating, “On a national level, since we are now a little over ten days since we started with the President of the Republic operations in Marseille, the anti-drug operations continue to produce a lot of effects.

“We are at 1738 interpellations at the moment, including 150 kilos of drugs seized, and millions of euros. More than 20,000 police officers and gendarmes have been mobilised.”

The Minister reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to these anti-drug operations, emphasising the necessity of a continual and robust police and gendarmerie presence in targeted areas.

Additionally, he announced plans for three new “XXL” anti-drug operations set to commence in other French cities the following Monday, underscoring the government’s proactive approach in addressing drug-related issues.

Darmanin emphasised the broader societal significance of combating drug trafficking, stating, “The fight against drugs is not only a fight for security; it is a fight for society.”

He highlighted the importance of addressing addiction, education, parental authority, and collaboration with local authorities in this collective effort.

Expressing gratitude to municipalities for their support, particularly in deploying municipal police forces and implementing measures within social housing complexes, Darmanin stated, “I am here in Saint-Denis, as earlier in Sevran, and I want to thank the municipalities for accompanying us.”

The Minister’s announcement comes in the wake of anti-drug raids commencing across France on Monday, following President Emmanuel Macron’s commitment to conduct approximately 10 similar operations in the coming weeks.
