UK citizens living in Belgium
A webinar on financial issues facing UK citizens living in Belgium will be held later this month.

The online event, from noon to 1.30pm on 21 September, will focus on tax, pensions and social security.

It is organised by the “Expat Welcome Desk” of the Brussels Commissioner for Europe and International Organisations and is part of a series of free events for UK citizens throughout 2023.

A spokesman for the organisers said, “Tax and social security are still largely managed at national level, so these are complex issues for anyone who moves or works across borders. However, it is important to make sure you are paying into the right tax system to avoid nasty surprises.

“Understanding the cross-border rules on social security and pensions will also help an individual claim the right coverage and make appropriate plans for retirement. Since Brexit, UK citizens who migrate or work across the EU-UK border face a new set of rules.

“People are invited to take part whether they live and work in Belgium or want to live here while keeping a UK-based job.

“We will explore tax and social security contributions for UK citizens who work in Belgium, live in Belgium but work for a UK employer and work for employers in both Belgium and the UK.

“We will also discuss the tax impact of inheriting property in the UK, claiming a state pension after a career split between the UK and Belgium an access to social security and child benefits for cross-border workers and families.”

In the free webinar, legal experts will present an overview of the relevant rules and explore case studies so participants can gain a more practical perspective on how to apply the principles to their own situation. After a brief presentation, there will be a Q+A.
