Farmers protest

The farmers protest in the Polish capital, Warsaw, took a violent turn, resulting in clashes and injuries to several law enforcement officers. Conflicting reports and suspicions of provocateurs have emerged, adding complexity to the unfolding situation.

Initial reports from Polsat News indicated that during the farmers’ demonstration near the Polish Parliament, disturbances and acts of aggression erupted. Demonstrators, after 14:00, began hurling cobblestones at the police, prompting the deployment of tear gas.

Attempts by some protesters to breach barriers protecting the parliament building were thwarted, but clashes extended beyond the immediate vicinity, spilling onto adjacent streets.

The police have asserted their efforts to contain the clashes and prevent their spread to other areas of Warsaw.

They also confirmed several injuries among law enforcement personnel during the confrontations. Furthermore, the authorities have detained more than a dozen individuals, some of whom attempted to breach the barriers around the Parliament.

Sławomir Izdebski, chairman of the Farmers’ and Agricultural Organizations Trade Union (OPZZ), expressed doubts about attributing the aggressive actions solely to genuine farmers.

Izdebski suggested that the presence of individuals wearing vests, commonly associated with farmers, does not necessarily imply their involvement in the violence.

He highlighted the contrast with previous peaceful demonstrations, hinting at a possible external influence inciting the unrest.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Michał Kołodziejczak echoed Izdebski’s concerns on social media, labeling the events near the Parliament as a provocation rather than a genuine farmers’ protest.

Eyewitness accounts revealed a troubling escalation, with protesters targeting media equipment and engaging in confrontations with law enforcement across various locations in Warsaw, including residential areas.

The Belgian farmers’ fervour extended beyond roadblocks as they targeted a distribution centre belonging to the Colruyt supermarket chain in Halle.

Sunday night witnessed a temporary blockade, subsequently diffused by Monday morning, as confirmed by a spokesperson for Colruyt.

As the new week dawned, residual disturbances stemming from the farmers’ protests lingered predominantly in the southern reaches of the country.
