German Far-Right AfD Loses Ground in Wake of Russia Scandal

Recent weeks have seen the German Far-Right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) grappling with the fallout from a significant scandal, which is reflected in the latest polling data.

The revelation that the Czech secret service possesses damning information regarding the AfD’s lead candidates for the European elections has cast a shadow over the party, leading to a gradual decline in public support.

Allegations suggest that Maximilian Krah, positioned at the top of the candidate list, and Petr Bystron, in the second position, may have received payments from associates of Putin to advance Russia-friendly policies.

In the most recent Sunday trend survey conducted by INSA for BILD am SONNTAG, the AfD’s support has dropped to 19 percent, marking a decrease of one percentage point compared to the previous week.

The broader picture of German politics reveals several notable trends:
  • The Union, comprising the CDU/CSU, continues to maintain a strong lead, standing at 31 percent, just shy of the entire traffic light coalition combined.
  • The traffic light coalition, encompassing the SPD, Greens, and FDP, collectively holds 33 percent of the vote. However, individual party support varies, with the SPD at 15 percent, the Greens at 13 percent, and the FDP at 5 percent.
  • The Left party remains below the 5 percent mark for the 24th consecutive week, currently polling at 3 percent. Meanwhile, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) holds steady at 6 percent.
  • Other smaller parties could potentially capture 8 percent of the votes.

These developments highlight the significant impact of the Russia scandal on the AfD’s standing in the polls. As accusations of collusion persist, the party faces heightened scrutiny and a decline in public trust.

Meanwhile, the CDU/CSU’s continued dominance underscores its resilience in the face of shifting political landscapes.

With no viable government formation without their involvement, the party remains a pivotal force in German politics.

The far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) plans to interrogate two of its deputies regarding their alleged ties to a pro-Russian influence network uncovered in Europe last week.

Germany’s interior minister Nancy Faeser stated that the investigation into the influence network dealt a “significant blow” to Russian disinformation.
