Five people were killed and 25 injured after a Russian strike hit a market in the city of Nikopol, in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, on 4 April, according to Ukrainian regional authorities and emergency services.
The attack took place at about 9:50am local time, when Russian forces reportedly struck the market area with a drone. Initial casualty figures released earlier in the day recorded 19 injured, but officials later said the number of wounded had risen to 25 as rescue and medical work continued.
Oleksandr Hanža, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, said eight of the injured were taken to hospital. Among them was a 14-year-old girl, who was later transferred to a regional hospital. Hanža said the girl, along with two men aged 28 and 72, was in a serious condition, while doctors assessed the condition of the other injured victims as moderate.
Photographs published by Ukraine’s State Emergency Service showed extensive destruction at the market site, including damaged trading stalls and debris scattered across the area. Emergency crews were deployed to deal with the aftermath of the strike.
Nikopol, which lies near the front line and across the Dnipro River from Russian-held territory, has faced repeated shelling and drone attacks during the war. Saturday’s strike on a civilian market is another reminder of the continuing vulnerability of Ukrainian towns and cities close to the front, where public spaces and civilian infrastructure remain exposed to attack. The incident comes amid continuing Russian aerial assaults on urban areas in several regions of Ukraine.
