We at EU Today were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our journalistic colleague and good friend Nick Powell.
During a press mission to Azerbaijan, Nick, aged 66, according to our contact in Baku died of a heart attack in his hotel room in Susha.
He is believed to have passed away peacefully in his sleep.
Nick, ITV Wales’ former Head of Politics, was described by former colleagues as “proud of being Welsh, proud of speaking Welsh, and proud of being part of Welsh public life as one of the most significant journalists of his generation.”
Nick had most recently been working as Political Editor with EU Reporter.
In this role he was re-united with his former ITN colleague, now publisher of EU Reporter, Colin Stevens, a significant figure in the Brussels bubble.
In his four years in his latter role, Nick made an impact as a highly professional journalist, a quiet and thoughtful gentleman, and a popular member of the Brussels press corps.
Nick most recently led the EU Reporter team in their excellent coverage of the European Parliament election results.
We send our deepest condolences to Nick’s family, to his fellow colleagues, and to his friends.
He will be much missed.
God bless!
