Today, February 24th, 2025, the European Parliament, European Council, and European Commission issued a joint statement commemorating three years since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This solemn anniversary is a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict that has shaken Europe and the world, underscoring the European Union’s steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The joint statement honours the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people, who have heroically defended their homeland against Russia’s aggression.
The EU leaders paid tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for Ukraine’s independence and freedom.
By standing firm against an illegal and brutal war, Ukraine is not only defending its sovereignty but also upholding the core principles of international law and democracy.
The statement emphasises that Russia and its leadership bear full responsibility for this war and the atrocities committed against the Ukrainian population. The deliberate targeting of civilians and critical infrastructure underscores the tragic human cost of the conflict. The EU remains resolute in its demand for accountability for all war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated during this aggression. The leaders welcomed the progress made toward establishing a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine, signaling a firm commitment to justice and international law.
Unprecedented Support from the European Union
Since the start of the invasion, the European Union and its partners have acted swiftly and decisively, demonstrating remarkable unity and solidarity. To date, the EU has provided Ukraine with economic, humanitarian, financial, and military assistance amounting to EUR 135 billion, of which EUR 48.7 billion has been dedicated to military support. This comprehensive aid package underlines the EU’s commitment to Ukraine’s defence, stability, and post-war reconstruction.
The statement reaffirms that the EU will continue to provide regular and predictable financial support, ensuring that Ukraine can sustain its defense and rebuild its infrastructure once peace is restored. This commitment not only highlights the EU’s role as a global leader in humanitarian assistance but also reinforces the deep political and economic ties between the EU and Ukraine.
Sanctions and Pressure on Russia
In response to Russia’s aggression, the European Union, in coordination with its international partners, has imposed unprecedented sanctions targeting Russia and those complicit in the war. These sanctions are designed to limit Russia’s ability to sustain its war efforts, with measures affecting key sectors of its economy.
The EU has also begun using windfall profits from frozen Russian assets to bolster Ukraine’s defense industry and aid in energy recovery, demonstrating innovative financial strategies to support Ukraine’s resilience. As part of its ongoing pressure campaign, the EU adopted a sixteenth sanctions package, further tightening restrictions on Russia’s economy and political elite.
Strengthening European Defence and Sovereignty
In a historic move, the European Union has ramped up its defence industry production, reinforcing its military support for Ukraine while simultaneously enhancing its own defense readiness and sovereignty. This strategic shift marks a new chapter in European defense policy, reflecting the realities of a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
Ukraine’s European Future
The joint statement underlines a powerful message of solidarity: “Ukraine is part of our European family.” Recognising the Ukrainian people’s aspiration for a European future, the EU granted Ukraine candidate status and initiated accession negotiations, reflecting a shared commitment to democratic values and European integration. Despite the ongoing war, Ukraine has made remarkable progress in implementing accession-related reforms, highlighting its determination to align with EU standards.
Moreover, the gradual integration of Ukraine into the EU’s internal market is already underway, paving the way for deeper economic ties and political cooperation. This strategic alignment reaffirms the EU’s vision of a united Europe, where Ukraine’s future is firmly anchored within the European Union.
Global Solidarity and the Pursuit of Peace
In a world marked by geopolitical tensions and shifting alliances, the EU leaders emphasised the importance of maintaining transatlantic and global solidarity with Ukraine. They urged the international community to remain steadfast in supporting Ukraine’s quest for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, based on the Ukrainian peace formula.
The joint statement is a resounding call for continued diplomatic efforts, military support, and humanitarian aid, ensuring that Ukraine not only survives but thrives as a sovereign, democratic nation.
As the war enters its fourth year, the European Union’s message is clear: “We stand firm with Ukraine, reaffirming that peace, security, and justice will prevail.” This unwavering commitment underscores the EU’s role as a global defender of human rights, international law, and democratic values.
The European Union’s solidarity with Ukraine is not merely symbolic but backed by substantial political, economic, and military support. This support reflects the EU’s vision of a secure and prosperous Europe, where sovereignty and democracy are safeguarded against aggression.
