Ukrainian military forces have reportedly commenced the use of drones equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) to strike targets within Russia, achieving a high degree of accuracy in hitting specific objectives within the territory of Russian Federation.

According to sources cited by CNN, Ukrainian forces have begun integrating basic forms of artificial intelligence into drones, aiding them in navigation and evasion of countermeasures.

“The precision amidst obstacles is facilitated by the utilisation of artificial intelligence. Each aircraft is equipped with an onboard computer containing satellite and terrain data,” explained a source to CNN.

“Flights are predetermined in coordination with our allies, and the aircraft adhere to the flight plan, enabling us to target objectives with accuracy up to the meter,” the source added.

It is reported that such precision is ensured through the drones’ sensors. “They have something called ‘machine vision’, which is a type of artificial intelligence.

“Essentially, you take a model, put it on a chip, and train this model to identify the geography and the target it’s heading towards.

“Once it’s fully deployed, it will be able to identify where it is,” explained Noah Sylvia, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute, a British think tank.

“It (the drone) doesn’t require any connection (to satellites); it’s completely autonomous,” she added.

Chris Lincoln-Jones, a former British officer and expert in drone warfare and artificial intelligence, told CNN that the level of “intelligence” in drones is still very low.

“Drones have not yet reached this level of autonomy, but we are still in the early stages of developing the potential of this technology,” he said.

CNN reached out to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Security Service of Ukraine, but neither agency commented on the use of artificial intelligence technology.
