The European Parliament’s Environment Committee (ENVI) has today (Nov 29th) adopted the outcome of negotiations on the new EU Nature Restoration Law.
On 9th November representatives of the European Parliament, the EU Commission and the EU Member States reached a joint position on the world’s first law on the restoration of destroyed habitats.
Now that it has cleared the hurdle in the Environment Committee, the law will be finally voted on by Parliament’s plenary at the beginning of 2024, probably in the week of 26th February.
“The world’s first law to save nature clears the penultimate hurdle in the fight against species extinction in Europe.
“Today’s vote is a ray of hope for Europe’s nature, especially after the painful failure of the regulation on a more sustainable use of pesticides.
“Biodiversity is our survival insurance. Without intact ecosystems, there will be no drinking water, no clean air, no fertile soils.
“With the outcome of the negotiations on the Nature Restoration Law adopted by the Environment Committee, the EU is travelling to the World Climate Conference in Dubai with an important building block for mitigating the climate crisis and adapting to climate change.
“The law can set global standards in the fight against the climate and biodiversity crisis.
“I am pleased that some EPP MEPs no longer support their leader Manfred Weber’s campaign against the Green Deal and have voted in favour of the outcome of the negotiations. I therefore expect a solid majority in the plenary vote.” Jutta Paulus, Environmental expert and negotiator on the EU nature restoration law.
