Hamza Alam, a 22-year-old man from Romford, east London, has been sentenced to five years in prison for multiple terrorism-related offences.
Hamza Alam, who referred to himself as an “online librarian,” was found guilty of spreading ISIS propaganda and encouraging acts of terrorism through social media, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police.
Alam was convicted on three counts of disseminating terrorist publications and one count of encouraging terrorism. The sentencing took place at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday.
His arrest in June 2022 was followed by a detailed investigation by the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, which uncovered his activities online.
The investigation revealed that Alam operated under the codename ‘H’ and served as an administrator on a Telegram channel dedicated to sharing extremist content.
This channel distributed materials that promoted Jihad and glorified ISIS fighters. Counter terrorism officers seized his electronic devices, which provided crucial evidence of his involvement.
Detective Chief Superintendent Gareth Rees, Head of Operations for the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, stated that Alam’s self-description as an “online librarian” was misleading.
Rees emphasised that Alam’s actions went beyond merely sharing information, as he actively disseminated violent and extreme terrorist publications with the intent to incite others to commit acts of terror. Rees highlighted the significant danger posed by such content, particularly in terms of radicalising young individuals within communities.
Further examination of Alam’s social media accounts revealed additional posts that celebrated the 9/11 bombers and advocated extreme violence. These activities played a critical role in his arrest and subsequent charges.
Alam was initially arrested in June 2022 and formally charged in March 2023.
The case underscores the commitment of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command to identify and prosecute individuals involved in spreading terrorist propaganda.
Rees pointed out that the work of the officers in this case illustrates the dedication to ensuring public safety and bringing offenders to justice.
