Ukrainian forces have advanced further into the Hlushkivskyi district of Russia’s Kursk Oblast on 13 September, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The advancement was confirmed by geolocated footage released on the same day, indicating that Ukrainian troops had moved south of the settlement of Vesele. This location is southwest of Hlushkove and approximately three kilometres from the Ukrainian-Russian border.

Russian sources have reported that Ukrainian forces launched attacks to the southwest of Hlushkove. The specific areas mentioned in these reports include Novyi Put, Vesele, and Medvezhe, which lies to the east of Vesele. Although these claims by Russian sources have not been independently verified, they align with the ISW’s findings, which indicate an increased military activity by Ukrainian forces in the region.

The movement into the Hlushkivskyi district could be part of a broader strategy by Ukraine to gain tactical advantages along the border. Control over key areas within this region could serve as a buffer against potential incursions by Russian forces or provide a base for further military operations. The proximity to the border gives Ukrainian forces a strategic position, potentially deterring or complicating any Russian military response.
