NATO has stated that it does not consider the recent discovery of fragments of a Russian drone in Romania as evidence of a deliberate attack on the territory of the North Atlantic Alliance.
This assertion follows the identification of the drone parts in the region, amidst rising tensions due to ongoing Russian war on Ukraine.
A NATO representative, speaking to Reuters, conveyed that the alliance has intensified its monitoring and surveillance efforts, including increased air patrols, in response to the recent Russian attacks near its borders.
“Although NATO has no information indicating a deliberate attack by Russia on alliance territory, these actions are irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” the official stated.
Romanian Response
In the wake of the incident, Romania scrambled F-16 fighter jets as Russia conducted attacks on southern Ukraine using Shahed drones.
Romanian authorities also dispatched experts to investigate the area around the village of Plauru, near the Izmail region, suspecting that drone debris might have fallen there.
Subsequently, the Romanian Ministry of Defence confirmed that fragments identified as parts of a Russian-origin Geran-1/2 drone were discovered at one of the three locations designated as potential crash sites.
Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, reported that three Russian drones had crossed into Romanian airspace.
Background of Russian Drone Use
Russia has increasingly relied on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), such as the Shahed drones, in its military operations.
These drones, capable of long-range missions, have been deployed extensively in Russia’s war with Ukraine. Their use near NATO borders raises significant security concerns and necessitates robust surveillance measures by the alliance.
