Dozens of North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the border into South Korea, prompting South Korean forces to fire warning shots, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea.
Approximately 20 to 30 North Korean soldiers, operating within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), crossed into South Korean territory on Tuesday before retreating after warning shots were fired by South Korean troops. This marks the second such incursion in less than two weeks, following a similar incident on 9 June.
The South Korean military’s response successfully forced the North Korean soldiers back across the border, and no further unusual activity was observed following the confrontation. A representative of the Joint Chiefs of Staff indicated that the incident appeared to be accidental.
Ongoing Tensions
This border breach occurs amidst heightened military activity by North Korea along the DMZ. Since April, North Korea has deployed hundreds of troops to frontline areas to undertake various operations, including laying mines, constructing barriers, and building roads for military purposes.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff in South Korea suggested that these actions are likely intended to strengthen internal control over North Korean military personnel and civilians, as well as to prevent attempts to cross the border into South Korea.
The Demilitarized Zone, established at the end of the Korean War in 1953, serves as a buffer between North and South Korea. While it is heavily fortified and monitored, occasional breaches occur, contributing to the volatility of inter-Korean relations.
