In the last few weeks, Putin’s Russia has failed to be elected to the International Court of Justice, Human Rights Council, UNESCO Executive Board, and the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
On Friday (December 1st), the increasingly isolated nation failed to be elected to the International Maritime Organisation Council.
President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the organisation’s decision, thanking IMO members “for taking this crucial step.”
“In the last decade, no country has done more to undermine freedom of navigation than Russia,” Zelensky tweeted.
Immediately after Russia launched its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, it blocked the movement of humanitarian cargo from and into Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.
“This pattern of failure is no coincidence – any state that illegally invades another, commits a litany of human rights violations, attacks civilian ships, fires missiles at World Heritage sites, and contravenes the Chemical Weapons Convention, is manifestly unworthy of a role within these organisations,” said a spokesman for the UK Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office.
“The implications are clear: if Russia wishes to contribute to global governance, it must respect its international obligations.”
