Russia’s “man in Kyiv” Viktor Medvedchuk captured by Ukrainian special forces in attempt to flee country

Ukrainian President Zelensky has announced that Ukrainian special forces have apprehended Viktor Medvedchuk, the pro-Russian Ukrainian politician charged with treason in May 2021 who escaped house arrest four days after Russia launched its full-scale invasion. He is considered a close personal friend of Vladimir Putin, who is the godfather of Medvedchuk’s youngest daughter.

Ukraine’s security service – SBU – posted a photo showing Mr Medvedchuk in handcuffs and wearing Ukrainian military fatigues.

The SBU said in a statement: “You can be a pro-Russian politician and work for the aggressor state for years. You may have been hiding from justice lately. You can even wear a Ukrainian military uniform for camouflage.

“But will it help you escape punishment? Not at all! Shackles are waiting for you, and same goes for all traitors to Ukraine like you.”
