Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX led by Elon Musk, issued a warning on Saturday regarding a “degraded service” due to the Earth experiencing its most significant geomagnetic storm in two decades, caused by heightened solar activity.

With approximately 60% ownership of the roughly 7,500 satellites encircling the Earth, Starlink maintains a dominant presence in the satellite internet sector.

Musk conveyed earlier through a post on X that the Starlink satellites were facing substantial stress due to the geomagnetic storm but had managed to endure thus far.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) affirmed that this storm ranks as the most substantial since October 2003 and is expected to persist throughout the weekend.

It poses potential risks to various systems including navigation, power grids, and satellite communication.

The vast constellation of Starlink satellites, stationed in low-Earth orbit, relies on inter-satellite laser links to transmit data at the speed of light, facilitating global internet coverage.
