In the opening match of the 2023 Women’s World Cup joint hosts New Zealand achieved their first ever victory at a World Cup after a goal in the 48th minute by Hannah Wilkinson.
“New Zealand had one major goal for this tournament; to win a game in the World Cup, first for any New Zealand team, men’s or women’s. For them to start off doing that, they have a really good shot of qualifying.
“For all the happiness that they have here now, they need to move on and get back to it because now they are in a great position to qualify.” – Jonas Eidevall Arsenal F.C. manager.
Hannah Wilkinson, a keen surfer, currently plays for Australia’s Melbourne City.
The crowd of 42,137 set a record for a football match in New Zealand eclipsing the previous record of 37,034 for a men’s World Cup play-off.
The final will be played at Stadium Australia, Sydney, on 20th August.
