President Donald Trump has announced that his administration has approved a defence budget in the “vicinity” of $1 trillion, marking an unprecedented increase in U.S. military expenditure.
The announcement was made during a meeting at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. President Trump emphasised the necessity of strengthening the military in response to current global challenges. He stated, “We are very cost conscious but the military is something that we have to build and we have to be strong because you have a lot of bad forces out there now.”
Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth supported the President’s statement, highlighting the administration’s commitment to rapidly rebuilding the armed forces.

The proposed budget represents a significant increase from the current $892 billion allocated for national defence programmes, which include the Pentagon, nuclear weapons development, and security initiatives at other agencies. This move aligns with the administration’s broader efforts to enhance military readiness and address emerging global security threats.
In February, Hegseth directed an 8% reduction in certain Pentagon expenditures, reallocating approximately $68 billion annually to prioritise programmes such as missile defence. This initiative is part of a wider effort to optimise defence spending while ensuring the military’s effectiveness.
The administration’s focus also includes addressing strategic challenges posed by nations such as China and Russia. The proposed budget increase reflects a commitment to maintaining a robust deterrent posture and ensuring the U.S. military’s capability to respond to various global contingencies.
Congressional approval is required for the proposed budget to be enacted. The proposal is expected to prompt extensive discussions among lawmakers regarding national security priorities and fiscal responsibility.
The announcement comes amid ongoing debates about the allocation of federal resources and the balance between defence spending and other national priorities. The administration maintains that a substantial investment in the military is essential for safeguarding national interests and addressing contemporary security challenges.
Further details on the proposed budget and its specific allocations are anticipated in the forthcoming federal budget release, expected in late May.
