Ukrainian defence forces have successfully struck and sunk a Russian Black Sea Fleet submarine in the port of Sevastopol.
The incident marks the second time during the ongoing war that Ukrainian forces have targeted a submarine in this strategic location.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the submarine in question is the B-237 “Rostov-on-Don”, classified by NATO as a Kilo-class submarine.
The submarine, capable of launching Kalibr missiles, was heavily damaged following a direct hit by Ukrainian missiles.
This latest attack follows a previous incident on 13th September 2023, when the same vessel sustained significant damage during a Ukrainian missile strike.
The Ukrainian military reported that the operation involved the coordination between rocket forces and the naval units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In addition to the submarine strike, Ukrainian forces also targeted and inflicted substantial damage on four S-400 “Triumph” anti-aircraft missile launchers in the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea.
The B-237 “Rostov-on-Don” submarine was commissioned on 26th December 2014 and was one of four Kilo-class submarines within the Russian Black Sea Fleet capable of deploying the Kalibr cruise missile. These submarines play a crucial role in Russia’s maritime strategy in the region, offering stealth capabilities and potent offensive options.
The sinking of the “Rostov-on-Don” represents a significant blow to the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The vessel, valued at approximately 300 million dollars, had undergone repairs and trials in the Sevastopol harbour following the September 2023 attack.
