French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his willingness to debate with far-right leader Marine Le Pen ahead of the European Parliament elections on June 9th, emphasising that the future of France is significantly influenced by this election.

Marine Le Pen’s eurosceptic National Rally (RN) party is currently leading in the opinion polls with approximately 33% of the vote, which is about double the support forecasted for Macron’s centrist, pro-EU party.

Macron, in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper, urged the public to scrutinize the RN closely, stating, “My dear compatriots, wake up, look closely at who they are!”

Macron explicitly stated his readiness to engage in a debate with Le Pen, indicating that the decision now rested with her.

In response, Le Pen took to the social media platform X to express her willingness to debate, but she stipulated that Macron must agree to resign or call for snap parliamentary elections if his party loses on June 9th.

This condition is one that Macron would be highly unlikely to accept.

Macron has previously defeated Le Pen in the presidential election runoffs in 2017 and 2022, yet her popularity has continued to grow since those contests.

Although Macron is ineligible to run for a third term, the upcoming EU election is being viewed as a significant indicator of the parties’ current standings and public support.
