MEPs have demanded an end to the death penalty in |Iran, adding that the Iranian regime “imprisons people with dual citizenship and uses them as leverage in foreign policy and the UN must investigate human rights violations.”
They say that Majid Reza Rahnavard, Mohammad Mehdi Karami, Mohsen Shekari, Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini, Hamed Salahshoor are, it is claimed, among the girls, boys, women and men who have been sentenced to death in “mock” trials since Jina Mahsa Amini, 22, was reportedly murdered in police custody in September.
S&D rapporteur and MEP, Evin Incir, told this site, “Words of the international community are not enough anymore. It´s high time to consign the brutal violence of the regime of Iran to the dustbin of history. Actions, though, are crucial if we want to stop delaying the moment of freedom.
“We urge the EU Council and member states to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.
“We call on the EU to adopt new sanctions against the leadership of the regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including their families.
“The oppression must end. The women of Iran have had enough. The whole population has had enough. Let´s listen to their voice. Let´s send a clear message to the Mullahs: Women, life, freedom.”
The Left Group issued a statement which reads: “Our solidarity goes to all those in Iran fighting for their social, political and sexual rights. The European Union must consistently support all those fighting for their basic rights.
“Untargeted sanctions also hit Iranian civil society hard and eroded economic conditions in the country. Future sanctions must therefore be subject to a harm analysis that ensures that civil society is not significantly affected by them. We demand targeted sanctions against the regime’s political elite.”
It goes on, “Certain forms of inter-parliamentary dialogue must be suspended for the time being. However, the severance of all diplomatic relations is not expedient. The same goes for the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA): In the medium term, maintaining the JCPOA is a vital prerequisite for peace in the Middle East and North Africa,” says the statement.
