The Kremlin has dismissed the possibility of a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine, insisting instead on a long-term resolution that aligns with Russia’s stated interests. This position was articulated by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov in an interview with state broadcaster Russia-1.

Speaking on the matter, Ushakov stated: “We believe that our goal is a long-term peaceful settlement, and we are striving for this—one that takes into account the legitimate interests of our country and our well-known concerns. Certain steps that merely imitate peace efforts seem unnecessary to anyone in this situation.”

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions regarding a potential ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Ushakov underlined that Moscow does not view a temporary truce as a viable solution, dismissing such agreements as merely offering a “pause” for Ukrainian forces rather than leading to meaningful progress towards peace.

During discussions with US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, Ushakov reiterated Russia’s stance, stating that any temporary ceasefire would serve only as a strategic respite for Ukraine’s military rather than paving the way for a lasting resolution. “Naturally, I commented on the agreements regarding a temporary ceasefire, and I outlined our position that this is nothing more than a temporary reprieve for Ukrainian troops—nothing beyond that,” he said.
