North Korea: Tensions Rise as Kim Jong Un Orders National-Level Nuclear Weapons Test

North Korea has conducted its inaugural exercises simulating a “nuclear launch” system under the guidance of Kim Jong Un, with the aim of replicating the operation of the “nuclear launch button,” as detailed by the state news agency KCNA.

This development arises against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the region and in response to what North Korea perceives as provocative military exercises by the United States and South Korea.

The exercises, which involved artillery units, signified the country’s inaugural national-level nuclear weapons management system assessment, dubbed the “Nuclear Trigger.”

They took place on Monday to exhibit diversified nuclear capabilities and purportedly to protest against what North Korea regards as provocative and aggressive military manoeuvres by the U.S. and South Korea.

Kim Jong Un observed the simulated exercises, which encompassed troop manoeuvres in nuclear counterattack positions and simulated artillery fire of nuclear warheads in response to a nuclear crisis alert.

The North Korean leader commended the preparedness of the country’s “world-class” tactical nuclear weapons, expressing contentment with the exercises, according to KCNA.

This exercise follows North Korea’s successful launch of a reconnaissance satellite into orbit in November and recent announcements of missile tests, including a trial of a strategic cruise missile and a novel anti-aircraft missile.

Last week, North Korea launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea off its eastern coast.

The Pentagon has acknowledged North Korea’s persistent support for Russia in the ongoing conflict.

Meanwhile, Russia recently obstructed a UN mechanism for monitoring sanctions against North Korea at the close of March.
