Pakistan: the killing of Priyantha Kumara

by asma

Sri Lankan factory manager Priyantha Kumara, a Christian, was tortured and murdered by a baying mob in the Sialkot District of Pakistan on December 3rd 2021. The mob claimed that he had committed “blasphemy”, a capital offence in Imran Khan’s Pakistan.

Although no judicial execution has taken place as of yet under the highly controversial and widely condemned laws, it is normal for those accused of the offence to be released from custody and into the hands of the mob.

It is reported that Kumara, who worked in the garments industry – a highly important sector in the Pakistani economy – was a “strict” manager. The allegations that led to his murder by a gleeful mob, it has been reported, may have made by disgruntled employees. Blasphemy laws are often used to settles personal grudges in this way.
