Pro-Russia candidate Peter Pellegrini has emerged victorious in the second round of the presidential elections in Slovakia, securing 53.12% of the votes after the processing of 100% of the ballots.
According to official data, Pellegrini, the Speaker of the country’s parliament, triumphed in the presidential race, while his opponent, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivan Korcok, garnered 46.87% of the votes.
Pellegrini’s victory marks a significant development in Slovakian politics. As the coalition partner of Prime Minister Robert Fico, his win potentially consolidates power into his hands, similar to his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban.
The European Parliament had previously expressed concerns that Pellegrini’s victory could lead to a concentration of power, akin to Orban’s style of governance.
If Pellegrini assumes the presidency, he will have to relinquish leadership of his party, “Voice.”
In such a scenario, there is a high probability that this party may merge with Fico’s Smer-SD party, thus bringing Fico closer to gaining full control over the parliamentary majority.
Pellegrini’s victory signifies a shift in the Slovakian political landscape and could have ramifications for the country’s governance and its position within the European Union.
