Dr. Naseem Baloch, Chairman of the Baloch National Movement, has strongly condemned the killing of prominent researcher, poet, writer, and educator Professor Ghamkhwar Hayat, describing the incident as part of a broader pattern of violence against Baloch intellectuals in Balochistan.
In a statement, Dr. Baloch said the assassination reflects the continuing targeting of academics, writers, and cultural figures in the region. He linked the killing to previous attacks on Baloch intellectuals, including the 2011 assassination of noted scholar and poet Professor Saba Dashtyari.
“Professor Ghamkhwar Hayat dedicated his life to literature, education, and the intellectual development of Baloch society,” Dr. Baloch stated. “He authored nearly eighteen books and made significant contributions to both the Balochi and Brahui languages. His loss is deeply felt across the Baloch nation.”
Dr. Baloch further argued that attacks on intellectuals represent attempts to weaken the cultural and political identity of the Baloch people. He said teachers, writers, and scholars are essential to preserving a nation’s history, language, and collective consciousness.
He also referred to the historical killing of intellectuals during the 1971 conflict in Bangladesh, claiming that similar patterns of repression are now being witnessed in Balochistan. According to Dr. Baloch, Baloch academics, students, poets, and activists have for years faced intimidation, enforced disappearances, and violence.
“The killing of Professor Ghamkhwar Hayat is not an isolated incident,” he said. “It highlights the worsening human rights situation in Balochistan and the continued climate of impunity surrounding violence against civilians and intellectuals.”
Dr. Baloch stated that Professor Hayat played an important role in promoting education, social awareness, and cultural identity through his literary and scholarly work. “His assassination is a major loss not only for Brahui literature but for the broader intellectual and cultural heritage of the Baloch people,” he added.
The Baloch National Movement chairman called on the United Nations, international human rights organizations, literary institutions, and global media outlets to closely monitor the human rights situation in Balochistan and to investigate allegations of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and repression targeting Baloch civilians and intellectuals.
