On 15 June 2024, Brussels once again bared witness (pun intended) to the annual Cyclonudista, where cyclists shed their inhibitions—and their clothes—to pedal for safer cycling infrastructure and environmental awareness.

Undeterred by the rainy, windy weather, participants gathered at Square Frère-Orban, shivering but spirited, ready for a ride that promised both fun and activism in equal measure.

Starting at 2 PM, a fearless fleet of nude cyclists took to the streets of Brussels, embarking on a multi-kilometer journey through the city’s heart. Origins and Objectives

Cyclonudista is part of the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR), a movement that has its roots in the Spanish Ciclonudista, first held in Zaragoza in 2001. This cheeky protest reclaims the streets for those who move by their own power—be it on foot or bike—and pushes back against the car-centric domination of urban spaces.

In 2004, Conrad Schmidt took the concept global with the WNBR, using nudity to highlight the human body’s vulnerability in traffic and demanding respect for those who choose human-powered transport. The WNBR also aims to raise awareness about our addiction to oil, which fuels conflicts and environmental harm, promoting a switch to healthier, more enjoyable, and eco-friendly modes of transportation.
