Cyclonudista Brussels: Biking Bare for a Better Tomorrow

On 15 June 2024, Brussels once again bared witness (pun intended) to the annual Cyclonudista, where cyclists shed their inhibitions—and their clothes—to pedal for safer cycling infrastructure and environmental awareness.

Undeterred by the rainy, windy weather, participants gathered at Square Frère-Orban, shivering but spirited, ready for a ride that promised both fun and activism in equal measure.

Naked and Not Afraid

Starting at 2 PM, a fearless fleet of nude cyclists took to the streets of Brussels, embarking on a multi-kilometer journey through the city’s heart. These brave souls weren’t just showing off their birthday suits for the thrill of it; they were making a powerful statement about the vulnerability of cyclists and the dire need for better protection on the roads.

Origins and Objectives

Cyclonudista is part of the World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR), a movement that has its roots in the Spanish Ciclonudista, first held in Zaragoza in 2001. This cheeky protest reclaims the streets for those who move by their own power—be it on foot or bike—and pushes back against the car-centric domination of urban spaces.

In 2004, Conrad Schmidt took the concept global with the WNBR, using nudity to highlight the human body’s vulnerability in traffic and demanding respect for those who choose human-powered transport. The WNBR also aims to raise awareness about our addiction to oil, which fuels conflicts and environmental harm, promoting a switch to healthier, more enjoyable, and eco-friendly modes of transportation.

A Bare Necessity

Brussels residents are no strangers to this yearly spectacle of cycling nudists. The sight of bare bodies on bikes is not just eye-catching but serves a crucial purpose. By stripping down, participants draw attention to the lack of cycling lanes and the dangers of sharing road space with trams, cars, and other vehicles. It’s a call for the political sphere and public alike to take cycling safety seriously.

Clothing Optional, Message Mandatory

Not everyone who joins Cyclonudista feels the need to disrobe completely. The event is inclusive, allowing participants to wear costumes or remain partially clothed. This flexibility ensures that anyone passionate about the cause can take part in a way that feels comfortable for them. The motto “as bare as you dare” is taken to heart, encouraging participation across comfort levels.

Seamless Organisation

The event’s smooth execution is a testament to meticulous planning and collaboration with local authorities. The route is crafted with the help of the police, who manage traffic and close off streets to vehicles, ensuring a safe and peaceful ride for all participants. Even with the less-than-ideal weather, the event proceeded without a hitch, thanks to the dedication of the organisers and the city’s support.

Pushing for Change

Cyclonudista is more than a ride—it’s a vibrant, bold protest advocating for significant changes in urban mobility. Participants, through their daring display, call for more cycling paths and a better sharing of the road between cyclists and motorists. Their message is clear: cycling should be safe and accessible for everyone, and the current infrastructure must improve to protect those opting for this eco-friendly mode of transport.

The Bigger Picture

As the 2024 Cyclonudista wrapped up, the sight of soaked but satisfied cyclists reminded everyone that braving the elements was worth it. This event not only highlighted the pressing need for better cycling conditions but also celebrated the freedom and joy of cycling. The hope is that such a bold demonstration will lead to real changes, making Brussels a safer, more welcoming place for cyclists in the years to come. So, if you missed this year’s ride, mark your calendars for next year—whether you choose to go au naturel or not, your participation will push the pedal forward for a better tomorrow.
