A highly sophisticated drug trafficking network smuggling large quantities of narcotics between Spain and France has been dismantled following an extensive law enforcement operation.
Dubbed Operation CABRAS, the operation was led by the French Gendarmerie under the supervision of the Specialised Interregional Jurisdiction (JIRS) of Rennes. The criminal syndicate was responsible for the large-scale importation of cannabis resin, cocaine, and synthetic drugs into France via Spain, employing advanced smuggling techniques to evade detection.
A Highly Organised Criminal Network
The investigation revealed that the traffickers had established a well-structured operation, utilizing advanced methods for drug transportation and concealment. Their activities were based out of a logistical hub in southern Spain, where narcotics were stored and prepared for shipment. From there, the drugs were smuggled into France using carefully planned convoys.
The syndicate employed a sophisticated modus operandi, using convoys consisting of lead and carrier vehicles. These vehicles were equipped with hidden compartments designed to conceal the illicit substances from authorities. To further protect their operations, traffickers implemented counter-surveillance tactics, frequently changing routes and vehicles to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies.
The Take Down: Coordinated Law Enforcement Action
On January 27th, authorities executed a meticulously planned operation that led to the interception of one such drug convoy upon its arrival at a property in the Morbihan region of France. Acting swiftly, the French Gendarmerie arrested the three drivers involved, as well as the regional leader of the syndicate, who was present to oversee the delivery.
Simultaneous house searches were carried out in both France and Spain, leading to the arrest of the two primary suspects who headed the criminal organisation. In addition to these key arrests, authorities gathered substantial evidence against the network, further solidifying the case against those involved.
Operation’s Success: Arrests and Seizures
The international operation, conducted in close collaboration with Spanish authorities, led to the arrest of 24 individuals connected to the trafficking network. In addition, law enforcement seized a staggering 151 kilograms of drugs, including Cocaine, Synthetic drugs, Cannabis resin and Herbal cannabis
The total estimated street value of the confiscated narcotics is EUR 2.5 million. This significant seizure represents a major blow to the criminal organisation, disrupting its operations and cutting off a key drug supply route between Spain and France.
Europol and Eurojust’s Involvement
Given the complexity and international scope of the case, Europol played a crucial role in supporting the investigation. The agency provided analytical expertise to map out the syndicate’s structure, identify key individuals, and track smuggling routes. Europol also facilitated intelligence sharing between French and Spanish authorities and funded the deployment of French officers to Spain to ensure seamless cross-border cooperation.
On the day of the operation, Europol deployed experts to both France and Spain to coordinate real-time information exchange, ensuring the success of the mission.
Eurojust, the European agency for judicial cooperation, also played a pivotal role. It supported judicial authorities throughout the investigation and was instrumental in preparing European Arrest Warrants and European Investigation Orders, which were successfully executed during the operation.

The dismantling of this drug trafficking syndicate represents a significant victory for European law enforcement agencies in the ongoing fight against international drug smuggling. The operation highlights the effectiveness of cross-border collaboration and intelligence sharing in tackling organized crime.
