A coalition of pro-European parties in Romania has agreed to form a government aimed at maintaining the country’s European path and countering the rise of far-right movements. Representatives from PSD (Social Democratic Party), USR (Save Romania Union), PNL (National Liberal Party), UDMR (Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania), and national minorities signed a resolution outlining the coalition’s objectives.
Resolution Highlights
During a meeting at the Romanian Parliament on Wednesday evening, the leaders of the participating parties adopted a four-point resolution that will serve as the foundation of the government’s programme. The text of the resolution, read by PNL President Ilie Bolojan, includes the following commitments:
- Coalition for Stability and Modernisation
The coalition will prioritise governmental stability and the implementation of reforms aimed at modernising Romania for the benefit of all citizens. - Reaffirming the European and Euro-Atlantic Path
The coalition pledges to uphold Romania’s commitment to European and Euro-Atlantic partnerships, deemed essential for national security and prosperity. - Focus on Development and Reform
The parties commit to avoiding international isolation, accelerating economic growth, and safeguarding Romania’s European trajectory. Specific priorities include absorbing EU funds, advancing reforms under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), and achieving Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). - Appeal to Voters
Citizens are encouraged to participate in the upcoming elections on 8 December 2024 and vote for a pro-European, democratic, and secure Romania, rejecting isolationism, extremism, and populism.
A Unified Front Against Extremism
The coalition agreement reflects a shared intent to prevent far-right parties, such as AUR (Alliance for the Union of Romanians), SOS Romania, and POT, from gaining influence in Romanian politics. PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu emphasised that the coalition sends a clear message of unity among pro-European forces and signals an unequivocal rejection of alliances with far-right parties.
“This coalition marks the beginning of a stable, pro-European government. None of the signatory parties will negotiate with AUR, SOS Romania, or POT,” Ciolacu stated.
Leadership Negotiations
Although details of the governing programme are yet to be finalised, discussions are set to commence next week. For now, attention is focused on the upcoming electoral campaign.
Elena Lasconi, leader of USR, has indicated her willingness to collaborate with PSD, acknowledging the party’s right to nominate the next Prime Minister, given its electoral success. “If we agree on clear and swift reforms, I see no issue with Marcel Ciolacu as Prime Minister,” she stated.
Electoral Stakes
The coalition aims to present a unified front in the lead-up to the presidential elections and subsequent government formation. Lasconi highlighted the importance of setting aside political rivalries to ensure national stability and progress.
“This is about the country’s future, not about party politics. We must act without pride or past grievances,” she said, urging unity among political leaders and voters alike.
Context of the Agreement
The recent parliamentary elections on 1 December resulted in a fragmented legislature, with seven parties represented. This outcome necessitated coalition-building to secure a functional majority. The new coalition intends to stabilise governance and counteract potential political instability.
The pro-European coalition will officially form the government after the presidential election’s second round, scheduled for Sunday, 8 December 2024.
