Belgian federal police conducted a series of arrests on Sunday morning in Ninove, Brussels, Charleroi, and Liège as part of an investigation into jihadist activities: “The four individuals were plotting a terrorist attack,” stated the federal prosecutor’s office.
Special units executed early morning raids at four different locations across the country, accompanied by significant security measures.
The operation targeted four individuals who had been in contact online and were devising a plan for a terrorist attack.
Among those apprehended is one adult from Liège and three minors from Ninove, Brussels, and Charleroi.
All four individuals are French-speaking and had connected through online platforms.
Conversations retrieved from these platforms indicated signs of radicalisation, with references made to the Islamic State.
“They are suspected of participating in a terrorist group and preparing a terrorist attack,” stated Eric Van Der Sypt of the federal prosecutor’s office. No weapons or explosives were found during the house searches.
The specific target of the planned attack had not yet been determined. “However, in such circumstances, we prefer to intervene sooner rather than later,” emphasised the federal prosecutor’s office.
