The Joy of Democracy, by Askold S. Lozynskyj

Pearls of Wisdom

For my entire adult life I have been a registered Democrat, albeit undisciplined, until it got boring. I lived in New York and now in New Jersey, essentially Blue states.

My lack of party discipline allowed me to vote for as many Republicans as Democrats for president, senator or  congressman and certainly lower rank. I admit I always was and continue to be a single issue voter – Ukraine.

In my current retirement year two factors compelled me to change registration.

This happened six months ago. I then registered as a Republican in Cape May County, New Jersey – the main reason was boredom.

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill was my House representative and she was always on my side of the political spectrum and certainly did not need my vote.

But in the 2nd Congressional District of New Jersey  which includes Cape May County and Wildwood Crest, where my family has a residence, the Congressman from there was one of the more obnoxious members of Congress, a turncoat former Democrat, a dentist by profession and an extremist Trumpshevik who stated openly that if Trump lost the 2024 election, he, Jefferson Van Drew would not accept the result.

To borrow a line from Jerry Seinfeld, I am not an anti-dentite, but I am viscerally opposed to the likes of Congressman Jefferson Van Drew.

I am a subscriber to Van Drew’s newsletter, so  I can present and argue against  an entire  litany of his objectionable positions. However, I will limit myself to his position on Ukraine.

He has never voted in favour of Ukraine.

This despite the fact that identifying the aggressor, that Russia has perpetrated war crimes, that Ukrainian children are being kidnapped or killed by Russia have never been in issue.

I have brought these matters to Van Drew’s attention in numerous communications.

He has responded, but only in pro forma, never addressing the criminality against Ukrainian children which I though would at least compel him to reconsider his MAGA Trumpshevik position. How insensitive do you have to be to ignore the plight of children!

And so, on Thursday May 30th, 2024 I voted for the first time in the Republican primary. In the box for President, I wrote in Nikki Haley despite the fact that I neither trust nor respect her.

She was a God awful Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations under Trump.  She never knew when to veto the Russians at the UN Security Council.

Trump was the only candidate on the ballot. In the House race Van Drew was the only candidate. I wrote in: “Anyone except for that insensitive and largely ignorant dentist.”

You would be amazed how good I felt despite the fact that my vote meant nothing.

Some may say, “Askold, grow up. This is not a game”  My response would be, “No, you grow up, it is a very dangerous game.”

It is the ultimate game, which unfortunately, affects billions of lives. Everyone has to play this game in order to prevent the killer clowns from assuming control.

Donald Trump, later in the day, convicted by a Manhattan, New York jury of criminal activity on 34 counts, Jefferson Van Drew, Viktor Orban, Robert Fifo and others, given the opportunity may transform our world into Putin’s world.

The only things standing in the way are Ukrainian courage, Western weapons and the will of the people throughout the world willing to exercise their democratic rights to safeguard the rule of law (justice and freedom) as opposed to the rule of  power, might, killing, torture and authoritarian rule.

In Europe in June, and in America in November, people have to exercise the rights which God and their Constitutions allotted them.

Throughout this time, they need to arm and not restrict the indomitable Ukrainian warriors. This is very much about Ukraine, but so much more.  It is about our survival as a global humanity.

Go ahead, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican in America,  or any of the parties in the European Union save the extremists, the xenophobes, exercise your right to vote for freedom and the rule of law provided the laws are just.

This is a crucial time and it will bring great joy to all who exercise their right to feel democracy in action because they have done their part.
