US Intelligence Ban Leads to Heavy Ukrainian Losses

by EUToday Correspondents

The decision by the United States to suspend military intelligence sharing with Ukraine has contributed to significant battlefield losses, with Russian forces advancing along key frontlines.

Reports indicate that the halt in intelligence support has resulted in heavy casualties among Ukrainian troops and has impacted their ability to conduct defensive and offensive operations.

Impact on the Battlefield

According to a report by Time, citing five senior Western and Ukrainian officials and military officers, the loss of intelligence data has had severe consequences. “There are hundreds of dead Ukrainians because of this pause,” one officer in Kyiv stated anonymously.

Morale within the Ukrainian armed forces has reportedly suffered, as troops now face combat without access to some of their most effective weapon systems—not due to Russian attacks, but due to US policy shifts. “This gives the enemy a significant advantage on the front line,” the officer added.

Russian Gains in the Kursk Region

One of the most affected areas has been the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have been attempting to hold territory gained during an offensive last August. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has viewed this region as a critical bargaining tool for future peace negotiations with Russia. His strategy has been to exchange control over parts of Kursk for the return of Ukrainian land currently occupied by Russian forces.

However, after the US ceased intelligence sharing, Russian troops quickly advanced in the region, attempting to cut off Ukrainian supply lines. Open-source intelligence group Deep State has reported rapid Russian progress, corroborated by battlefield maps showing shifts in territorial control.

Degraded Ukrainian Defence Capabilities

A source in the Zelenskyy administration confirmed that Ukrainian operations in Kursk have been the hardest hit by the loss of US intelligence. Without access to American reconnaissance data, Ukraine has lost the ability to detect Russian bombers and aircraft taking off from within Russian airspace. As a result, Ukrainian forces now have significantly less time to warn civilians and military units about incoming airstrikes or missile attacks.

The absence of US intelligence has also hampered Ukraine’s ability to carry out long-range strikes against Russian targets. Previously, Ukrainian forces relied on satellite imagery and real-time intelligence from the US to identify and strike key enemy positions at medium and long distances. Without this data, Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities have been severely limited.

Policy Shifts in Washington

On 4 March, US President Donald Trump decided to suspend all military aid to Ukraine, including shipments that were already en route. A day later, reports emerged that intelligence sharing had also been halted, affecting Ukraine’s ability to track Russian missile launches. Trump defended his decision, stating that he wanted to “stop the deaths.”

However, on 7 March, media reports suggested that the US was still providing some intelligence to Ukraine, albeit only for defensive purposes. This limited intelligence sharing is reportedly meant to help Ukrainian forces protect themselves rather than conduct offensive operations against Russian troops.

Strategic Consequences

The halt in US intelligence sharing marks a significant shift in Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian advances. The battlefield dynamics have changed, with Russian forces taking advantage of Ukraine’s reduced situational awareness. As Kyiv seeks alternative intelligence sources, including increased cooperation with European allies, the impact of the US decision continues to unfold on the front lines.
