Among the attendees was Belgian physician Matyas Kovacs, who seized the opportunity to ask Putin a question about understanding the essence of Russia.

However, what ensued was a surprising claim by Putin regarding Russia’s alleged role in the formation of Belgium, sparking debates and raising eyebrows across borders.

Kovacs, expressing his admiration for Russia and its culture, asked Putin for advice on understanding the Russian soul and potentially relocating to Russia for work.

Putin, visibly pleased with the question, emphasized the complexity of the Russian identity, describing it as a “patchwork of cultures” united by shared traditional values.

He commended Kovacs for broaching the subject and stressed the potential for collaboration with those who grasp this essence.

Interestingly, Putin’s response took an unexpected turn when he made a bold assertion about Belgium’s presence on the world map, attributing it partially to Russia’s actions.

He claimed that Russia’s stance played a significant role in placing Belgium on the global stage. This statement, however, diverges from historical accounts.

In 1830, when Belgium rebelled against Dutch rule, Russia sided with the Dutch regime.

Tsar Nicholas I initially intended to send troops to Brussels to quell the uprising but was compelled to redirect them to address a revolution in Poland. Consequently, Belgium gained independence without Russian intervention.

Putin’s assertion, therefore, contradicts established historical narratives.

Putin’s reinterpretation of history is not unprecedented. He has previously asserted historical claims, such as Ukraine’s historical affiliation with Russia, that have been met with skepticism and criticism.

His recent remark regarding Belgium’s history further underscores his propensity to manipulate historical narratives to suit political agendas.

The Belgian medical institution where Kovacs is affiliated has distanced itself from his private activities and beliefs, emphasizing the separation between personal and professional realms.

However, they acknowledge the sensitivity of the matter and are evaluating the need for further action.

Following Kovacs’ question, subsequent speakers, notably American Caleb Maupin, echoed sentiments of admiration for Putin’s leadership, highlighting his recent interview with Tucker Carlson as exemplary of his dynamic leadership style.

However, such accolades raise concerns about the absence of critical inquiry into Putin’s policies and actions.
