Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that losing unity within Ukraine or among its allies could have perilous consequences as the war with Russia surpasses 1,000 days. In an interview with Fox News, he also emphasised the critical role of the United States in influencing the war’s outcome, arguing that Russian President Vladimir Putin is weaker than the collective strength of the West.
The Role of Unity in Ukraine’s Survival
Speaking with Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of maintaining solidarity both domestically and internationally. Reflecting on the early days of the war, he noted that while those moments were among the most challenging, sustaining unity is now the most pressing priority.
“This moment depends, I think, on our unity in Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said. “And what is very dangerous is if we lose unity in Europe, and—most importantly—unity between Ukraine and the United States.”
Zelenskyy stressed that without this cohesion, efforts to counter Russian aggression would weaken significantly.
Diplomacy vs. Military Power
When asked about pathways to ending the conflict, Zelenskyy maintained that diplomacy remains the only viable solution. However, he expressed doubt over Putin’s role as a credible participant in such discussions.
“Isn’t Putin the one who can make this decision to end this war?” Yingst asked.
Zelenskyy acknowledged that Putin could theoretically halt the war but argued that the United States has a much greater capacity to influence the situation.
“Putin is weaker than the United States of America,” Zelenskyy said. “The President of the United States has the strength, authority, and weapons, and he can decrease the price for energy resources. By the way, I heard from President Trump in the media that he is thinking of lowering energy prices, and that is needed.”
The Trump Factor
Zelenskyy also expressed cautious optimism about the potential role of US President-elect Donald Trump in ending the war. While acknowledging the complexities involved, he reiterated the unique position of the United States as a global power.
“If, to use all the issues that the United States has, yes, [Trump] can [influence Putin]. Because he is much stronger than Putin. He’s stronger. The United States is stronger. The economy is stronger. The United States has a very big influence,” Zelenskyy said.
The Risk of US Support Declining
A significant point of concern for Zelenskyy is the potential reduction of US defence funding for Ukraine. He warned that such a move could have catastrophic consequences for the war effort.
“If [the US] will cut [funding], I think we will lose. Of course, anyway, we will stay and we will fight. We have production, but it’s not enough to prevail. And I think it is not enough to survive,” Zelenskyy said.
He acknowledged that Ukraine would adapt to such a scenario but emphasised that continued US support is essential for long-term success.
Implications for the Future
Zelenskyy’s comments come as debates over Ukraine policy intensify in the United States, particularly with Trump preparing to assume office. The former president has previously suggested strategies to reduce energy prices, which Zelenskyy views as a potential lever to weaken Russia’s war economy.
At the same time, Zelenskyy’s plea for unity highlights the fragility of the international coalition supporting Ukraine. The war’s duration and the mounting challenges of sustaining military and economic aid test the resilience of Western alliances.
