Avdiivka: Ukrainian Troops Withdraw Due to Critical Ammunition Shortages

by EUToday Correspondents

In a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian troops have made the strategic decision to withdraw from the besieged town of Avdiivka.

The withdrawal comes amidst critical shortages of artillery rounds, further exacerbated by delays in U.S. military aid, which has been held up in Congress for months.
The decision to retreat was made to prevent encirclement by advancing Russian forces, marking a tactical manoeuvre aimed at preserving the lives of Ukrainian servicemen.

Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, recently appointed as the head of Ukraine’s military, emphasised the necessity of the withdrawal to safeguard the lives and health of Ukrainian soldiers.

Avdiivka, once a bustling town with a population of 32,000, now stands devastated by the conflict, serving as a grim testament to the toll of war on civilian populations.

The retreat from Avdiivka underscores a significant shift in the dynamics of the conflict, with Russia making substantial gains, particularly following a failed Ukrainian counteroffensive last year.

Despite efforts to fortify their positions, Ukrainian forces found themselves outmatched, facing overwhelming odds and a dire shortage of essential munitions.

President Volodymyr Zelensky, while acknowledging the exhaustion of Russian forces in Avdiivka, lamented the lack of adequate weaponry, highlighting the critical need for continued support from Western allies.

Zelensky’s plea for increased military aid was echoed by U.S. President Joe Biden, who expressed concern over the potential fall of Avdiivka due to ammunition shortages exacerbated by congressional inaction.

The White House attributed the forced withdrawal from Avdiivka to dwindling supplies, laying blame on the delay in passing crucial military aid packages.

Biden reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine and urged Congress to urgently approve the necessary measures to replenish Ukrainian forces.

In response to the escalating situation, Zelensky engaged in diplomatic efforts, meeting with both Republican and Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives in Munich.

Expressing hope for bipartisan support, Zelensky emphasised the imperative of securing continued assistance to confront Russian aggression effectively.
